Not all insurance companies are the same.  A common question is if things are stolen from the car if they are covered.  There are a few things to consider with this question and that includes if you have a full coverage policy with your car, home owners or renters insurance, and more.

When something is stolen from your car that is worth a lot of money you may be able to claim it with one of your insurance policies.  When you have a full coverage policy with your car it is common you will be required to pay the car insurance premium and the value of your items will be paid to you.  Full coverage usually pays for everything on your vehicle while it is parked from weather or theft and even collision. 

Comprehensive coverage is usually included in a full coverage for automobiles.  Comprehensive insurance is additional coverage that takes total care of a car.  This coverage will cover items inside of your car and even pay for a new paint job if you have hail damage.

Home owners or renters insurance doesn’t necessarily protect your vehicles on the property of your home.  If you work out of your car and commonly carry expensive items around in your car then it may be something you can add onto your policy.  However, most insurance companies recommend this type of coverage is provided through your required automobile coverage.

If you commonly drive around with things in your car that are very expensive there are a couple of things you can do.  The first thing you need to do is by GPS vehicle tracking software.  This will allow you to locate your vehicle if it is stolen and it may even lower your car insurance premium.  You need to specifically ask the insurance companies when you are comparing auto insurance policies for coverage for your personal property.  You also will need to specify the dollar amount of personal property you would like covered.  The higher you go the more your policy may be. 

If you are looking for the most affordable auto insurance and that is what you usually pay for then you will not have coverage for your personal property inside of the vehicle if it is stolen.  Many companies may practice intentional misrepresentation and say things that sound like personal items are covered.  Always verify before you purchase the coverage.

If you are looking for coverage for your personal property because you are forced to park on the street, live in your car, drive around with expensive items in your car, or something else then you need to compare car insurance rates.  The coverage you should ask for is a full coverage policy with comprehensive coverage.  Verify the coverage will pay you if things are stolen to replace items in your car.  Remember, whenever you call an insurance company to file a claim for stolen items you will be required to pay the deductible set by the company and you must be caught up on your car insurance premium.  This will also raise your monthly payment on your car insurance.

We all know that life insurance premiums may be set according to one’s occupation; the more dangerous the job, the higher premiums you will pay. It stands to reason that a miner will pay more for insurance than an office worker. This job would be labeled high risk? But did you know that this also applies to car insurance? Auto insurance companies have determined through their own research and experience that there are particular occupations that are also high risk?

An occupation report released by comparisonmarket.com, in 2006 revealed the results of their studies and showed the differential in insurance rates for many occupations. These findings show that a person who is employed as a scientist might pay $870.20, while a Business Owner may pay $1,405.11. That is a significant difference.

Some of the other occupations that were on the low end of insurance premiums are Retired persons, Unemployed persons, Pilots, Navigators, Disabled persons, Actors, Artists, farmers, public officials, and students, engineers, homemakers, designers, and athletes.

Some of the other occupations that were in the middle range of insurance presidiums are Librarians, Breeders, Roomers, Clerks, Cashiers, Computer technicians, Mathematicians, Researchers, Chefs, Bakers, Teachers, Architects, and people in Marketing and Advertising.

Some of the other occupations that were on the high end of insurance presidiums are Administrators, Supervisors, Managers, Policemen, Firemen, Medical Doctors, Dentists, CPAs, Comptrollers, Nurses, Attorneys, Lawyers, Judges, and Executives.

So what is the connection between a person’s job and their driving ability or their degree of risk?  Well, it had little do with ability.  It primarily takes into account the amount of time that person will actually be driving and the distances they will be driving.  Another big factor that seems to be part of this formula that Insurance Companies have is the degree of stress that a person’s occupation puts on them. A stockbroker, for instance may be under great stress when he or she leaves the office each day, especially after a tumultuous day at work. An attorney is often traveling from offices to courthouses and talking on telephone during these car rides about important matters. Business people, particular people in high positions are also prone to stress on their jobs, and on any given day, they may leave the office full of anxiety and therefore be a distracted driver. And so it would follow that a person who is self-employed has a lot of pressure and therefore falls into the high risk category.

If we want to examine the low end of insurance premiums, we can explain the insurance companies’ rationale by considering that these occupations have the opposite effect or impact on people. A scientist, for example, is in one place all day, does little traveling, and is usually not under pressure to complete his research. Retired persons probably drive less, drive shorter distances, drive off peak hours, and most likely have little stress in their daily lives. One last consideration, as far as low insurance rates go, would be an occupation such as a pilot. A pilot is trained in precision so it would follow that he would be a careful cautious expert driver.

You are driving a car and for whatever reason your insurance has either lapsed or you neglected to get in the first place, you pull out into the middle of the road and WHAM!  You get smacked by another driver.  The accident wasn’t your fault but now you are in panic mode because you are not covered.  How much trouble are you in with the law?  How much liability do you have?

If you’re under 25 years of age as a driver (or you’re the parent of an under-25 driver), you probably know that you can have some definite sticker shock when it comes to insuring your young person behind the wheel. Young person insurance rates, especially for males, can literally triple the family car insurance bill. This is especially true if the driver is added to the insurance of a new car with comprehensive coverage and not just liability coverage. Why? Because demographically speaking, young people, and especially males under the age of 25, have the most accidents overall (and the most fatal and serious accidents) of any age group. Therefore, this means that that group’s insurance rates go up, regardless of how responsible the individual driver is.

Doesn’t sound fair, does it? But that’s the way the insurance industry works. However, there are some things you can do as a parent (or that you can do as an under-25-year-old driver) to help lower your insurance bill. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Be a student with good grades

If you’re still in school, get good grades. You don’t have a driving record yet (and your insurance rates aren’t going to take a decent drop on their own until you’re 25, assuming you stay a good driver), but insurance companies like responsible young people; to that end, they like giving them a break on their insurance, too. And you look responsible when you get good grades. Usually, if you get a B or better average, your insurance company will be happy to give you a discount for being a good student.

Take an accredited driver safety course

Okay, so you might think you’re Joe (or Jane) Cool behind the wheel; you passed your driver’s test, right? Nobody can tell you what to do. However, if you want a break on your car insurance, be willing to hunker down and take an accredited driver safety class. They’re proven to reduce accidents, and many insurance companies will give you a discount if you can prove you’ve taken one. Check with your current insurance company; if it doesn’t offer you a “safe driver class” discount, look for one that does.

Shop around

That brings us to our third point. No matter how long you’ve been with your current insurance company, if it’s not going to give you a good rate, shop around. The Internet makes it easy to do, and you might be able to get a better rate at another company. At the very least, you can find another company that’s willing to give you the better rate and then bring that back to your current company and ask them if they’ll match the offer. Chances are, they will.

Do you have more than one policy with the same company? Ask for a multi-policy discount

This is a given. Most companies will give you a discount on your policy premiums if you have your home insurance, car insurance and student driver insurance, etc., all with the same company. If they haven’t given you discount, they should. So be sure to ask.

Consider driving a “beater”

No, I’m not talking about a broken down jalopy that’s not going to get you from point A to point B. However, I am talking about a safe car that’s not new and that you can simply put liability insurance on instead of comprehensive. This alone is going to get you better rates, because you’re not covering as much. However, combined with the other tips, you might just find you’re not paying all that much insurance, after all.
